How flexible is the mentoring time commitment?

The time commitment is fairly flexible, and matches are encouraged to create a personal mentoring schedule. ACP strongly encourages Mentors and Protégés to spend solid blocks of time together. All relationships should have at least 12 “significant discussions” over the course of the mentorship. Ideally the pair will meet once per month.

What is a “significant discussion”?

A “significant discussion” is the term ACP uses when a Mentor has assisted his or her Protégé’s career development by either spending a block of time with the Protégé, or creating a networking opportunity for the Protégé with one of the Mentor’s colleagues or coworkers.

I’m a veteran and work for one of ACP’s Participating Institutions. Can I apply to ACP as a Mentor?

Yes. If you have significant work experience in your field and are interested in mentoring veterans junior to you, we encourage you to apply.

What information does ACP ask for in the veteran Protégé application?

The online application requires contact information, service information, career interests, education, hobbies, and mentoring preferences. Selected candidates are contacted by an ACP Operations Associate to conduct a phone interview to obtain more details about the candidate's career goals and objectives.

If I separated from active duty prior to 2001, am I still eligible to apply as a Protégé?

No. ACP limits participation to those veterans who have served on active duty since 2001

Which factors does ACP consider when accepting Protégés into the program?

We consider all applications from those individuals who have served since 2001, as well as spouses of service members severely wounded or killed in action. ACP gives preference to those with service-connected disabilities and those who demonstrate an enthusiastic interest in utilizing the program to assist in their transition.

Is there a monetary award or cost for those participating in the program?

No. Participation in the program is free and voluntary. Upon request, ACP provides information about organizations that award scholarships and provide financial support to veterans and their families.

If accepted, may I choose a Mentor from a Participating Institution of my choice?

No. ACP will determine the best matches between Mentors and Protégés.

Why is participation in the Mentoring program limited to certain cities?

Participation is limited to the cities in which ACP’s Participating Institutions elect to participate.

If I would like to become a Mentor but do not work for one of the Participating Institutions, what can I do?

Only those individuals associated with our Participating Institutions are eligible to become ACP Mentors. If you work with a company that is not a Participating Institution, please inform your colleagues about ACP. If there is an interest in learning more about becoming one of ACP’s Participating Institutions, please send inquiries to: info@acp-usa.org.
